Subject: Industrial Parks along the U.S.-Mexico border

Many manufacturing plants are constructed of temporary panels which can be disassembled and relocated in another park -- or in another country. Tijuana is host to some 26 industrial parks, along with temporary residences which appear around them. Some plants in northern Mexico have closed as production plants relocated to Asia.

While unionization is not forbidden, the formation of unions is unlikely due to rapid turnover of personnel. The future of production facilities in northern Mexico is now in doubt, as plants relocate further south, or to Asia.

 

 

Plastica Assembly Line, Tijuana

A supervisor watches youthful workers on assembly line of Plastica. These components enter the United States duty-free, under NAFTA provisions, and the parts are assembled north of the border into products bearing brand names like Panasonic. Few assembly line workers are much over 30.
