Freedom of movement in the age of "free trade" (global society)

Subject: Borders

This monument commemorates thos who have died attempting to cross into the United States since the institution of Operation Gatekeeper. Note plastic water bottles. From 1996 until 2002, some 2000 known victims have died in the region of southeast Californian and southwest Arizona. Previous immigrants had crossed easily near Tijuanaa. The effect has not decreased the number of immigrants, only made the crossing more dangerous, as immigrants have looked for trails through the desert region. Coyotes offer to help the immigrants for fees as much as $1500. Sometimes the Coyotes deliver, true to their word, and in some cases the immigrants are robbed or abandoned.

This section of the wall (looking east here, U.S. on the left, Mexico on the right) will be monitored by motion sensors and lights. The wall will continue some 66 miles inland from the sea, forcing immigrants to traverse the border across mountain and desert terrain. The number does not seem to diminish. There is probably no serious determination to discourage determined immigrants from entering the USA, where some industries rely on "illegal aliens" who are easily manipulated by employers.
