The wall separating the United States and Mexico extends from the Pacific Ocean (shown here) to 66 miles inland.

Under Operation Gatekeeper, initiated in 1996, the wall will have three fences in some places.

Train Gate (Goods Only)

Armed guards prevent illegal immigrants from entering the United States while the gate is open for a Santa Fe train. Goods move through this section of the border; immigrants are forced further east where a hazardous entry into El Norte is still possible.
