Walls (NOT fiction) ISRAEL/PALESTINE
East Jerusalem: The owner of a convenience store contemplates the effect of the new barrier wall on his business. His customers live on both sides of the wall; those on the other side will have to pass through a distant checkpoint to do business here. |

In urban areas, the Wall is assembled of concrete sections, 8 meters tall. Note graffiti, already etched into this section before assembly. I traveled to Israel/Palestine in April, 2004, to see the wall for myself, and to talk to people residing in its vicinity. The views expressed in these pages represents the viewpoint I have as a foreign observer, who came without any special side to take on the issue. (I will admit to having already developed a skepticism about the effectiveness of walls.) In a few words: The wall seems to be about more than just security. The location of the wall, and the frequent checkpoints in places that don't seem to have anything to do with security, suggest a policy of annexation, and a subjugation of the local populations east of the "Green Line."
