Walls
Freedom of movement keeps us informed.

Jerusalem: The Separation Wall, 8 meters tall, winds through the city, dividing neighborhoods. Residents complain that the wall separates neighbors and impedes their movement through the city, requiring passage through checkpoints to get to work, school, or elsewhere.

This section was under construction in 2004, and passes through an Arab neighborhood in East Jerusalem. This mother walks her child along the west side (i.e., Israel side). Arab residents have no say in the wall's location, and generally don't know before clearing and construction begin.

Graffiti has adorned the wall before it is even complete. This graffiti has appeared within sight of construction crew.

Abu Dis -- East Jerusalem.

This section of the barrier wall is far from the "Green Line" recognized by the United Nations as the border between Israel and the West Bank. Here, as elsewhere, the wall winds unpredictably around obstacles and homes.

Palestinians fear that the wall's location is intended to annex additional land to Israel before the seaparation of the countries. Here at Abu Dis, the effect of the wall is to include East Jerusalem into Israeli West Jerusalem.
